-----Help file for 3MX linux release candidate 2----- Currently there is no working battery meter, but dont worry too much. At about 10% battery a pop up box will warn you that your battery is low. Gkrellm is a system monitor with many uses. You may want to run that at startup also as it contains cpu info, ram info, wireless signal and volume controls. Its located at Utilities --> System Monitor There is also a minimalistic webserver built in. You can start and stop it from the menu. You can add files and your own index.html into the directory /etc/mini-httpd The system is no longer capable of using the software installer. I'm looking into a solution for it. (dpkg?) NOTE: Not every application is listed in the menu. There are a few console applications and tools laying around in the filesystem. (python, tcl/tk, nmap, streamripper, etc) Firefox is now upgraded to firefox 3. (borrowed from xenium) I also installed a few firefox plugins like adblock plus, greasemonkey, video download helper, and media connectivity. With the desktop up you can switch to 4 virtual consoles by hitting ctrl+alt+F2 - F5. Log in as root, no password. To switch back to desktop hit ctrl+alt+F6. I also removed most all docs and man pages to help save some space. If you require them i suggest googling for online documentation and manpages. ------------------------------------------------------------ Here's a list of 'some' of the installed applications. galculator, gnumeric, gqview, linvideos, nedit, pcmanfm, pidgin, rgbpaint, stardict, sylpheed, vlc, xrick, bitchx, antiword, aircrack-ng, bluefish, calcurse, gftp, gkrellm, gmemo, python2.4, leafpad, links, madplay, mc, minicom, mrxvt, transmission, nmap, pan, rdesktop, screen, openssh, streamripper, mocp, vncviewer, wistumbler2, wmweather, xarchiver, xchat, xterm, tcl/tk8.4, medit, etc etc. ------------------------------------------------------------- Known bugs: *Once wifi is started there is no way to disable it except to reboot/powerdown the computer. *Keyboard occasionally disables use of shift/fn keys. It seems to be a hardware issue. External keyboards work just fine. ------------------------------------------------------------- Tips 'n hints: I would suggest creating a root password right away. The system will still boot as root into the desktop, but for security reasons its good to have outside access blocked from having root access. Do this by typing: passwd root , then enter a password. The directory /root/Desktop holds the .desktop files that will be shown on the desktop. The remaining .desktop files reside in /share/applications. Just copy over what you want. The little bars by the clock are cpu and ram monitors. The green bar is cpu usage and the red bar is ram usage. Pay attention to it as large apps like firefox take 30 seconds to start and you might think it didnt. The green cpu bar will say otherwise. ;) _______________________________________________________________ Thank you's: Thanks to Debian mipsel repositories for alot of packages.
